Wooden tripod made of Honduras Mahogany, Ebony and brass. This series of three photos was taken during construction of this unique axis-folding tripod. Designed primarily as a sculptural exercise, the design utilizes a central axis around which the legs fold and through which travel the concentric mechanisms for controlling rotation and tilt of the head.

The upper portion of the tripod legs comprise a stack lamination that produces a pair of discs attached to each leg that together make up a stack of six discs when assembled. Each leg rotates about the adjuster tube that runs up through this stack. When the locking knob is engaged, an action similar to a clutch holds the legs in either open or folded position.
The tripod head has both tilt and revolving actions. A shaft connects the brass pivot visible on the side of the tripod head to the first of two Ebony knobs underneath the upper portion of the legs. This mechanism controls the tilt and rotation of the tripod head.
The tilt/rotate shaft passes through a threaded tube that serves to lock the legs in folded or unfolded positions via the second of the two Ebony knobs below.
Here the lever is being released in order to adjust the lower leg. The design of the tripod was intended to depart from conventional practice with the emphasis on sculptural qualities while remaining functional.
The camlock mechanism built into each leg comprises a lever with an adjustable eccentric action working against a brass pressure platen. The platten bears against the upper portion of the lower leg that runs up through the hollow interior of the upper leg.
